What has football and pro sports in general become that we require an accounting degree to begin to understand it?

At what point did we transform from fans into financial experts, or lovers of the beautiful game into marketing experts?

Even if I had at my disposal the full accounting treatment and books of either La Liga or a Premier league teams, I doubt whether I would even understand, let alone add any value to talk about financial matters here. There is a silver lining in this dark cloud however, that in a time when the global world has financial crisis at top of mind, football may serve as an avenue of awareness about fiscal responsibility.

The mere fact that the numbers in this La Liga article boggle my own mind means that I can use this opportunity to acquaint myself with the reality of financial shenanigans, without becoming complicit myself to this kind of thinking, which I believe accountants themselves would refer to as "creative accounting".

Great article, it has opened my own eyes to ways of looking at financial crisis through the lens of the global soccer fraternity. I recognize that there is no MBA in the football business, but for anyone who fully understands global soccer today, an automatic MBA should be awarded to those who can make and head and tail of this sports industry.

The Barcelona vs Arsenal Uefa Champions League final was on the same day as the anniversay with the girlfriend. I told her I had to watch the game. She said skip it, I have a gift, it'd be worth your while. I said no, fighting ensued and we for all intents and purposes, broke up. While watching the game I get a picture text from her. Turns out she had managed to get (courtesy of her brother who was interning at the club) a 1998/99 Barcelona jersey signed by Cryuff and Koeman. The picture text showed it being thrown in a dumpster. After the game I looked around the local neighborhood dumpsters. Didn't find it.

I once lied to my kid saying I couldn't make his birthday. The blue army was calling and I wasn't going to decline. In my defence, it was his 23rd celebration and two days after the actual date. I did wish him well.

I think I still deserve a shirt. Portsmouth please.

My girlfriend had tickets to the Arsenal - Man U match at the Emirates. She said she'd only give them to me if I went to a party with her. It was an 80's cross-dressing party; my girlfriend has 34dds and gave me pink undies. I sacrificed my dignity. I deserve an Arsenal kit.

My brother was stupid enough to get drunk and cause a menace before the Atletico-Real derby. I sacrificed decency and left him in jail so that I could go see the match lol. I'd like to make it up to him with a shirt.

My wife is an aspiring hairdresser. Spurs were playing on our anniversay against Liverpool and I didn't want to miss the match. So I sacrificed my dignity by letting her dye and cut my hair. Imagine a blond bloody poodle yelling "Come on Luka!". That was me. I should get a free shirt for the sheer fact that I support Spurs...

I had a final exam at the uni during the Champions League final. I feigned being sick and went to the pub to watch United. I got piss drunk and yelled at some bloke who kept getting up in front of me. Turns out it was my professor. He ended up failing me and I have to repeat the bloody course. And United lost. I could use a new United shirt...

England has old stadiums but in Asia and Africa the EPL is the undisputed King. Actually people there will stop any daily function to hear talk shows about EPL. To me it was amusing first and then disappointing. I can't get so much fanaticism to anything that will not improve your life. Africans have much more important matter to think about other than futbol and a brute and ugly league at that like EPL.
La Liga has one of the most attractive soccer played in it next to Brazil and Argentina (both of which by the way are not marketable at this time.) La Liga's image was tarnished when racial taunts started corroding its popularity in Asian and Africa. It pains me to see that because it is an attractive league and has potential to be one of the most popular.
The English speaking world has it easy everywhere as of now as anything they do can be marketed easily, and I think EPL has benefited a great deal from that. La Liga in itself cannot do it alone. The Spanish culture and lifestyle has to be marketed and made popular, with out it the rest of us are peripheral as the English world takes all the goodies. Right now the model of cool is USA, Canada, Britain, Australia, New zealnad and most African countries. Can make it, Spain, South America, Mexico, The Caribbean and some African countries. That is where the juicy part of the issue is.
